• Discover What They Love

Every SEND child has unique interests, passions, and things that bring them joy. The foundation of any meaningful relationship starts with genuine curiosity.

Take time to observe. Listen without judgment. Ask open questions. Notice what lights them up - whether it's trains, dinosaurs, music, or patterns. This isn't about data collection; it's about seeing the whole child. It’s now your chance to research and become a pro at whatever they adore! If they like football, Pokemon etc, you can easily find out the basics to have a meaningful discussion with them about it. This leads to them growing a strong bond with you over mutual interests!

• Build Trust Through Connection

Once you understand what matters to them, use that knowledge to create genuine moments of connection. This is where relationships transform from surface-level to meaningful.

Engage authentically. Share their interests. Join their world without trying to change it. Show that you value what they value. Trust grows when children feel truly seen, heard, and accepted for who they are.

• Be Consistent, Always

Trust is fragile. It's built through repeated, reliable interactions. SEND children need to know that you'll show up - not just physically, but emotionally and authentically.

Stay the course. Be predictable in your responses. Follow through on promises. Create routines they can depend on. Consistency isn't boring - it's the foundation of safety, and safety is where relationships flourish. If you turn up everyday, the relationship and bond will build naturally.
